Introduction

Iran has one of the strongest militaries in the middle east. It has  approximately 610,00 active soldiers and millions of reserve forces. Iran’s military power depends largely on three things. 

• Large Army 

Iran has one on the largest armies in the middle east, consisting of the regular army and the Islamic revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). 

• Missiles 

Iran is considered to have the Middle East’s most advanced ballistic missile program, capable of hitting targets up to 2,000–2,500 km away.

• Drones (UAVs) 

Iran has developed several advanced drones, such as the Shahed and Mohajer series, which it uses for surveillance and attacks. 

Naval Strategy 

Iran’s navy is strong in the Persian Gulf and is equipped with fast attack boats, submarines and anti-ship missiles.

Military Power of Iran is considered strong in the Middle East. Iran neither has advanced fighter jets nor does any country in the world sell such modern weapon systems to Iran. Now the question arises despite all this, how is Iran so powerful? Iran’s greatest power is its geography. Iran is located on the edge of the Persian Gulf. This place is not only rich in oil but 40% of the world’s oil goes through this route. If Iran wants, it can close this route at any time. 

Iran  is the 21th largest military force in the world while America is the 1st and Israel is the 15th military power. Iran has a full army including army, navy and air force. It also has Islamic revolutionary Guard Corps which is a powerful military branch and it has its own land forces and units. Iran’s defense budget is only $6.3 billions. Iranian army is strong at 545,000 soldiers. The most powerful part of Iranian forces are Revolutionary Guards with around 100,000 soldiers. Iran has one of the most established missile programs in the world, including short and medium range missiles capable of hitting targets up to 1,000 kilometers. 

Structure of Iran Military

Iran’s military is divided into two main forces: the Regular Army (Artesh) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

Iran Ground Forces (Army Strength)

Iran’s ground forces (Army Strength) are considered one of the largest conventional ground armies  in the middle east. Its ground army consists of approximately 350,000 regular soldiers who guard the country’s land borders and perform defense duties, while the land units of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) include even stronger personnel. 

Iran’s ground forces also possess a large number of tanks and weapons. Their armoured units include over a million main battle tanks, approximately 1,500+, case vehicles, and artillery (towed and rocket systems) that provide firepower on land. 

The main role of these ground forces is to defend the country’s borders from enemy attacks, conduct land defense operations, and consolidate Iran’s military power on the ground. This strength makes Iran a strong military force in the region.

Iran’s Air Force is considered one of the strongest air forces in the Middle East and is a vital part of Iran’s military power. It’s Air Force has approximately 50,000 personnel who operate fighters jets, transport aircraft, helicopters and drones.

It also has modern missiles, radar systems and air defense weapons that protect Iran’s airspace and support ground forces. 

The main role of the Iran Air Force is to maintain Iran’s air power, protect its borders, and ensure strategic defense. This air power makes Iran a strong force in the Middle East. 

Iran Naval Power

Iran’s Navy is considered strong in the Middle East and is an important part of Iran’s Military Power. It’s navy consists of ships, submarines and special naval units that protect Iran’s water borders in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea.

Iran’s Navy also possesses moderns missiles, torpedoes, and naval guns that can target enemy ships and water routes. The Navy’s main role is to protect Iran’s maritime borders, secure oil routes, and maintain regional security. 

This kind of power makes Iran’s naval power strong in the Middle East and give it an important position in the Military Power of Iran. 

Iran Ballistic Missile Program

Iran’s Ballistic Missile Program is considered the strongest part of its military power. Iran has focused heavily on its missile technology, resulting in its possession of a variety of missile types.

This missile include short-range missiles that can hit targets at a distance. These missiles give Iran the capability to target its enemies from a distance.

The main role of Iran’s missile program is to provide strong defense, deter enemies, and strengthen the country’s military strength. For this reason, Iran’s missile power is considered a very important and dangerous part of its overall military power.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) is considered the most powerful part of Iran’s Military Power. This force is separate from the regular army and trains for special missions and strategic operations. 

The IRGC has its own ground forces, naval units, missile programs, and the Quds Force, which operates in both international and domestic operations. The IRGC’s training and discipline make it an elite force that maintains Iran’s military strength. 

The main role of the IRGC is to protect Iran’s strategic interests, counter internal and external threats, and make Military Power of Iran dominant in the region.

Iran’s military weapons and equipment play a vital role in strengthening overall Military Power of Iran. To improve its defense capability, Iran has begun manufacturing its own weapons to a large extent.

Iran’s strength is primarily due to its missile capabilities, drone technology, and ground forces, which distinguish it from other countries. Together, these factors strengthen Iran’s defense system.

Iran Military Weaknesses

Despite Iran’s strong military power,  it also has some weaknesses. The most significant weakness is its lack of modern and advanced technology, which makes it incapable of competing with other powerful countries in every field. 

Iran’s Air Force also uses many older aircraft that are not effective enough for today’s modern warfare. Furthermore, some military equipment is outdated, limiting their performance. 

Another weakness is that Iran’s defense system relies heavily on missiles and tactics, while its conventional military power is not that strong. Therefore, Iran’s military strength, while strong, also has some limitations that effect its overall military power.

Iran’s military ranking is usually among the top 15—20 countries in the world. 

• Iran is ranked 11th in some rankings

• Some have Iran around 14th and 16th 

Iran is one of the world’s top military powers. (Confirmed to be in the top 20). 

Iran’s military power is considered strong in the world, and it generally ranks among the top 20 countries. Accroding to various military rankings, Iran’s position ranges from approximately 11th to 16th, which demonstrates its strong defense capabilities.

Iran’s ranking remains strong due to its large army, missiles system, and strategic planning. Although Iran lacks advanced technology, its strategy and weapons have made it a significant military power globally. 

For this reason, Iran’s military strength gives it an important position in the world’s powerful armies.

Future of Iran Military Power

The future of Iran’s Military Power depends on its planning and technology. Iran is trying to modernize its military and focus more on missiles, drones, and its local defense industry. 

In the future, Iran will strengthen its strength in areas where it is already powerful, such as missile systems and drone technology. This could improve its defenses and create challenges for its enemies. 

However, Iran will also face some challenges, such as limited resources and a lack of modern technology. Therefore, Iran’s military strength may remain strong in the future, but it will need to further improve its strategy and planning.
