The Indonesian National Armed Forces — Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) — use a unified rank system shared by the Army (TNI-AD), Navy (TNI-AL) and Air Force (TNI-AU). With more than 400,000 active personnel, the TNI’s ranks reflect a blend of Dutch colonial and Japanese wartime influences, reshaped after Indonesia declared independence and founded its armed forces on 5 October 1945. Junior and field officers carry the same titles across all three services, while the flag ranks take distinct service names: Jenderal in the Army, Laksamana in the Navy and Marsekal in the Air Force. The OF/OR codes shown below are approximate equivalents for comparison — Indonesia is not a NATO member.
Commissioned Officer Ranks of the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD)
Army officers graduate from the Military Academy (Akademi Militer, Akmil) in Magelang and enter service as Letnan Dua. The officer corps is grouped into junior officers (Perwira Pertama), field-grade officers (Perwira Menengah) and generals (Perwira Tinggi).

How Promotion Works in the Indonesian Military
Officers begin at the service academies — Akmil for the Army, AAL for the Navy and AAU for the Air Force — and promotion combines time in grade, merit, fitness reports and completion of career courses such as the Command and Staff College (Sesko) and the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas). General and flag officer appointments are made by the President on the recommendation of the TNI commander. The Panglima TNI — the overall commander of the armed forces — is appointed by the President with the approval of the House of Representatives (DPR). Mandatory retirement for most personnel is at age 58.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the highest rank in the Indonesian military?
The highest active ranks are Jenderal (Army), Laksamana (Navy) and Marsekal (Air Force), all at OF-9. Above them sit the honorary five-star ranks of Jenderal Besar, Laksamana Besar and Marsekal Besar — the Army version was awarded only to Soedirman, Nasution and Soeharto.
Does Indonesia use one rank system for all branches?
Yes. The TNI uses a unified rank structure: junior officers, field officers, warrant officers, NCOs and enlisted personnel share the same titles across the Army, Navy and Air Force. Only the flag ranks differ — Jenderal, Laksamana and Marsekal.
What do the stars, jasmine flowers and chevrons mean?
Stars mark general and flag officers (one to four). Jasmine (melati) buds mark field and junior officers. Chevrons mark NCOs — yellow for the Army and Air Force, blue for the Navy. Wavy bars identify warrant officers (Pembantu Letnan), and red bars identify privates.
How do you become an officer in the Indonesian military?
The main route is through the service academies — Akmil (Army), AAL (Navy) and AAU (Air Force) — graduating as Letnan Dua. University graduates can also join through career officer programmes (Sepa PK).
What does the red edging on an Indonesian uniform mean?
Red piping or edging marks a command appointment — for example, a battalion commander wears red edging to show they hold command, distinct from staff officers of the same rank.
Are the NATO OF/OR codes official?
No. Indonesia is not a member of NATO, so the OF and OR codes used in this guide are approximate equivalents provided only for comparison with other countries’ rank systems.
