Figure Grouping Test

25 original figure-based practice questions with answers and explanations — built for ISSB screening and Pakistan Army, PAF and Pak Navy initial test preparation.

What Is a Figure Grouping Test?

A figure grouping test presents a set of small figures and asks you to discover the one property they all share — for example, the number of sides, curved or straight edges, shading, a dot or shape hidden inside, or whether the figure is open or closed. Once you find the shared property, you choose the option figure that shares it too. The figures in a group are never identical: they differ in size, fill and direction, so the property is always about structure, not appearance.

Figure grouping questions appear in ISSB screening and in the initial tests of the Pakistan Army, the Pakistan Air Force and the Pak Navy, because they measure how quickly a candidate can sort visual information by a rule — a skill used again and again in military training. Candidates for PMA Long Course, PAF airman and aerotrade entries, and Pak Navy sailor and officer entries all meet this type. In the real Army initial test the sets come quickly, so the winning habit is to test one property at a time against every figure in the group: a true property must fit all of them, without a single exception.

Tip 1: Count first — sides, dots and inner shapes — because counting rules are the commonest grouping rules.
Tip 2: Check curved versus straight edges next; many groups are built on that single contrast.
Tip 3: Look at shading and at open versus closed outlines before you settle on a property.
Tip 4: Test your property against all six figures. If even one figure breaks it, it is the wrong property.
